Downtown Revitalization
Rouses Point is actively pursuing revitalization of its historic downtown. The Village has hired Elan Planning and Design to prepare a plan that will recommend actions to help strengthen the downtown economy, enhance the downtown's appearance, and strengthen connections between the downtown and Lake Champlain. Two highly successful visioning sessions were held in January of 2005 to solicit community input for the plan. The plan will be presented for public comment early this spring.
Rouses Point's downtown revitalization efforts received a major boost last year when the Village, in partnership with Friends of the North Country, received $200,000 from New York's Main Street Program to assist private property owners with façade restoration and to improve the downtown streetscape. Downtown property owners are preparing façade restoration project plans, with initial construction expected in the spring.
A Steering Committee of Village residents, business owners, and downtown property owners was appointed in the fall of 2003 to guide the revitalization process. Since that time, dedicated committee members have been meeting monthly to provide the public input essential to the downtown revitalization process.
